Six centuries, countless generations and one extraordinary place to call home. In 2026, we celebrate 600 years of the Plesnik family in Slovenia’s Logar Valley, marking six centuries since the family’s first documented mention in 1426. From 20 to 22 November, this remarkable anniversary will be celebrated with a special weekend of family stories, Alpine hospitality, exceptional cuisine and shared moments.
Six Centuries, One Valley
Some stories are written in books. Others are written into the landscape itself – in the fields tended by generations, the homes that have welcomed visitors and the traditions that quietly endure.

In the heart of the Logar Valley, surrounded by the peaks of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, lies a place called Plest. It is here that the Plesnik family’s story has unfolded for six centuries. The earliest documented reference dates back to 1426, when Jakob Plesnik was recorded among the free farmers of the Solčava region in a monastic land register. The family name itself is believed to originate from Plest, the very place where generations of Plesniks have lived and worked.
Six hundred years later, the family continues to call this Alpine valley home. It is an extraordinary continuity – and one that deserves to be celebrated.
A Place Where Time Follows Nature’s Rhythm
There is something about the Logar Valley that encourages you to slow down.
Perhaps it is the way the morning light gradually reaches the valley floor, the sound of water running over stones or the stillness of the meadows beneath the mountains.
For centuries, the rhythm of nature shaped life here. Spring meant returning to the fields and pastures. Summer brought long working days and livestock grazing higher in the mountains. Autumn was a time of harvest and preparation for winter. And winter brought its own quieter rhythm.

The Plesnik family lived according to these natural cycles, learning to work with the land rather than against it. Much has changed in six hundred years, but the valley continues to offer something increasingly rare: the freedom to experience time at a different pace. That sense of stillness is not simply part of the landscape. It is part of the family’s understanding of what makes this place special.
Deep Roots, Living Traditions
In the centre of Plest stands the old Plesnik elm tree, its branches spreading across an open meadow. It is a fitting symbol of the family’s history. Around it, paths lead towards the original homestead, Hotel Plesnik and the neighbouring family houses – different places connected by the same roots.
Yet the family’s heritage is not confined to old buildings, photographs or historical records. At Domačija Plesnik, the family homestead, traditions remain part of everyday life. The land is still farmed, native Cika cattle are raised, and local food is produced using knowledge and practices passed down through generations. Among the specialities is savinjski želodec, a traditional cured meat delicacy of the Upper Savinja Valley. These are not customs recreated for visitors. They belong to the living culture of the region, where the relationship between people, animals, food and the land remains tangible.
Here, tradition is not simply remembered. It is lived.

From Mountain Hospitality to Hotel Plesnik
The Plesnik family were farmers, shepherds and people who knew the surrounding mountains intimately. Over time, they also became some of the valley’s earliest hosts. As early as 1872, the family homestead was welcoming mountaineers, offering them food and a place to stay. What began as simple hospitality eventually developed into something much greater.
In 1932, Franc Plesnik opened the first Hotel Plesnik. The hotel was destroyed during the Second World War in 1944, but the family’s determination to welcome visitors survived. A modest guesthouse followed in 1952, and in 1995, Martina Plesnik opened the new Hotel Plesnik, continuing the family’s vision for hospitality in the valley.
Today, the boutique hotel combines contemporary Alpine comfort with a heritage that reaches back centuries. Its culinary philosophy draws on local ingredients and traditional recipes, while its approach to wellbeing is closely connected to the surrounding landscape.
The result is a form of luxury that does not compete with nature, but allows the valley to take centre stage.
Celebrate 600 Years With Us: 20–22 November 2026
An anniversary of this magnitude deserves more than a passing acknowledgement. Above all, it deserves to be shared with the people who have helped keep the Plesnik story alive.
From 20 to 22 November 2026, the Logar Valley will become the setting for a special anniversary weekend dedicated to six centuries of family heritage, hospitality and life in the Alps. Guests will be invited to discover the many chapters of the family’s story, explore the wider Plesnik world and enjoy carefully selected culinary experiences alongside a festive celebration.
The occasion will also mark the presentation of PLESNIK est. 1426, a shared story connecting the family’s different houses, people, flavours and experiences across the Logar Valley and Solčava region.
It is a celebration of the past, certainly. But even more importantly, it is a celebration of the relationships, traditions and shared experiences that continue to shape the family’s future.

Because the Plesnik story has never belonged to one building or one generation alone.
It belongs to the people who have lived it, the guests who have become part of it and the valley that has given it a home for six hundred years.
